ment ability, favorable climate compared to 1.83 million in 1970;I in pro vements,Additions At Pioneer Research StationCAVOUR — Plans for the addition of a combine and an electronic seed counter spark the activity for the coming year at the Pioneer Research Station near here. The station has also rented an extra 160 acres of land for the purpose of crop rotation. Research testing will continue on only 160 of the 320 acres the station now rents. The Cavour station is the headquarters for 13 Pioneer test; plots located in the portion of South Dakota east of the Missouri River. The research station works with other stations throughout the United States in breeding and selecting hybrids best suited for a certain area.In the past years, the corn has been harvested by hand at the station. The addition of the combine will cut down on this task although some plots will still remain hand picked. The new combine will also aid in weighing the corn and taking moisture samples. The machine will run a sample intoROTECTIONa bucket which is electronically controlled, thus weighing it. A sample will be taken from the corn and placed in a moisture bag and returned to the office in Huron for a moisture reading. The electronic seed counteris a sort of vibrating machinein which the corn falls through an electronic eye. The eye can be set to regulate how many kernels of corn falls through, thus easing the task of counting the corn to be bagged. The addition of newly-rented land will not increase the number of acres under research testing at the station. Research testing will continue on only 160 acres as in the past years. The additional 160 acres this year will be planted into sorghum to help defray expenses. The main purpose of the Cavour Research Station is for i the testing of dry-land farming, although only half of its research is devoted to this. The remaining half is set aside forj irrigated land.Station officials reported that the past year was a good one as high yields could be credited to moist conditions despite a dry spell at the end of the summer. Much advancement was made in bettering the hybrids with better hybrids expected soon.
