Friday, February 25, 1949. SMITHVILLE, Feb., 24—(Spl)— The Smithville Lions Club has pre sented Norbert Kinkler, outstanding FFA member of Smithville High School, with a registered Guernsey heifer, purchased from the Cade Guernsey Farm at Converse. The heifer was bought by the Lions Club to be given to the most outstanding FFA boy of Smithville High School, in order to promote the breeding and growth of better dairy stock in this section. The presentation was made on the con sideration that the first heifer calf born to the animal be given back to the club, which in turn will pre sent it to another deserving mem ber of the FFA. Norbert has been an outstanding student in FFA work. He has taken several prizes at Bastrop County Youth Fairs and at the Houston Fat Stock Show. He already has a start toward a Guernsey herd, winning a heifer in the milking contest at the Houston show last year. He also raised a champion Hereford feeder calf which he sold following the Houston show this year. In addition to his prize stock, this 16-year-old future farmer has helped his father, Charles Winkler, institute a number of better farm ing practices, such as soil conserva tion measures, crop rotation and insect control. He finds time to take part in high school athletics and is an honor student. All of these things were taken into con sideration when he was chosen by the Lions Club to be the first FFA boy to receive a heifer.
