By Lerma Carrot, Dublin.—The Christian answer to the collectivist farms of the Donsdale is opera on a suc cessful scale in much of Eire. The new co-operative may bring a new era of culture to Ireland and may even spread throughout the world. The latest movement by James Dillon, Minister for ture, is an extension of a Native —an organ on for the people of the land founded by the Rev. J. M. Hayes several years ago. It ‘is based on i6 councils work ing on local guilds of Muinti. The plan was first started in the ‘Parish of Bansha, Tip . where Father Hayes is r. i is now being extended to five other parishes, and numerous of Muintir Na Tire have under taken it. Based on Parish Union The “Bansha Plan,” as tt called, was designed to enable oe in a h to work to gether voluntarily for their com mon . It unites in a council representatives of the clergy, farmers, farm professional men, business men, and all who share in the life of a parish. _A parish agent is appointed by the Department of culture to advise farmers on government grants and loans. Father Haye s ays high tribute to the agent. At etings in six school areas, the agent suggested poultry-keeping on a practical scale. Every’ home in Bansha now has a poultry house, and an organization in con crete blocks has been started to supply them. Take Over ‘Women’s Work’ A jam factory has been started and has brought home some exiles to staff it. More than 400 people are going into fruit production. Father Hayes says that the parish is. eee nee in re boys go to poultry on farming. This had always been regarded as women’s work. One of the most helpful aspects of the new plan is that farmers are beginning to realize their im portance to Ireland, which is above all an agricultural country. Another co-operative success is demonstrated by the first “pro ducer-consumer” market recently opened in Dublin. It has created a sensation. It cuts out the “mid dle-man,” who rightly or wrongly is held responsible by the consum ers for the difference between the price paid to the producer and the price charged to the consumer. NCWC Wire]
