FEBRUARY 25, 1932JOHN WILLIAM JOHNSON )John William Johnson, who died in Moville on Thursday, February 18, at the age of 08 years, was a real pioneer in this part of Woodbury county. He was born on a farm near Naperville, III., in thehouse in which his father, the late Byron, Johnson, had been born, and which had been built by hisgrandfather who hewed the frames from the woods. When less than seven years old Mr. Johnson accompanied his parents to a homestead east of thepresent town of Lawton. At that time there were but one woodenhouse and three dugouts in what is now Floyd township and two dugouts in the northwest part of what is now Banner township. |Mr. Johnson was intelligent, observing and possessed of a retentive memory. Four years ago he wrote a history of Floyd township which is a valuable contribution to the history of Woodbury county. In it he tells of visits of Indians and of seeing deer every day and relates j how the grasshoppers ate the crops. | Names of the early settlers are recorded.A few months ago at the anniversary services in the United Brethren church Mr. Johnson gave a history of the organization of the church here long before Moville was founded.Mr. Johnson was well informed and a good conversationalist. He had opinions, but always respected the opinions of others. When he read something of importance he liked to share it with others, and the editor of The Mail has been indebted to him for many such articles.
