Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 25.—Hon. Wm. 2 Upshaw, congressman from the Fifth (Atlanta) district had an an niversary the other day...It was not a day, however, which gave cause for celebration. It recalled a bitter memory—a day of sorrow which has left its mark upon him as a cripple for the rest of his life. Thirty-five years ago the present brilliant lawmaker and nationally known orator, while at work on a farm in Cook county, fell from a wagon. For many months he was bed-ridden and in later years was forced to live in a rolling chair. “It was a fall, says the Atlanta congressman, “In which went down the rosy dreams that gladdened youth, the shining castles that cheer [tee me and the bright sweet hopes that Inspired and fed me on. Despite this handicap of his youth, Will D Upshaw overcame obstacles which would have discouraged and disheartened most men of his gener ation. In fact, his closest relatives and friends have often made the statement that his case is perhaps without a paralell in the whole coun try. A physical wreck, almost help less in his roller chair, he not only educated himself but with his writ ings and lectures which later on by sheer will power he was able to de liver he contributed to the educa tional support of more boys and girls i {n the South than any single man of his time. As time went on, he was able to discard his roller chair for crutches and now he uses only one crutch. Thus supported, he made his mem orable race for congress and it over said of him that he covered more ground and covered it faster than all of his opponents combined. Since taking his seat in the nation’s‘ law making body a year ago, he has at tracted nation-wide attention for his personal and public service. ‘Writing from the national capital, while en route to the east on a bus iness trip, Hon. Joe Lawrence, edi tor of the Ashburn (Ga.) Wiregrass Farmer, made the following state ment: “Your congressman, Will D. Up shaw,8 on the top of the wheel. He talks out in school and when he talks he says something. It comes with such force, you can hear it hit, no there is so much truth about it, hurts, Hurrah for Will D. Up shaw! Your district is honored by having sucht a man in Washington.”
