(itl list took the place of R. C. Gosling,Old Etonians* who was is unable to play owing 2 to a bad leg* the English team played as originallyy selected. The Irish team arrived in Birmingham at mid-day yesterday, their headquarters being the Colonnade Hotel, New-street. There were no alterations fn the constitution of theeleven. The metropolitan contingent of the English side arrived at New-street soon aftereeven o’clock last night, and were met bv Mr. McGregor and Mr. Reid. The ground at FerryBarr was in splendid condition. The sides were follows:England: G. Charsley, (Small Heath) (goal). A. H. Harrison (Corinthians) and F. R. Pelly(Corinthians) (backs), Albert Smith (NottsWiForest), W. N. Winck worth (Old Westminsters) and N. C. Cooper (Cambridge University) (half-backs X Top ham (Wolverbamp-Wenderers)toa Wanderers) and G. O. Smith (Oxford University) (right wing), G. H. Cottenll (OldBrightonians) (centre), W. E. Gilliat (Old Carthusians) and R, R. Sandilanda (Old Westminsters) (left wing) (forwards;.Ireland: Clugaton (Oliftonviile) (goal), W. Dawson (Irish Football Association).There were about 10,000 persons present. Ireland kicked off down the hill* but were immediately pressed* and Cotterill and Topham had 'unsuccessful shots. Gilliat scored for England eight minutes from the start as the result ef a fine individual run. Two minutes later Gaffiktn equalised with a brilliant shot. Two unsucceasful attacks by England followed, and then the Irishmen pressed, but Stanfield shot over. Clugston saved well from Gilliat and Cotterill* but at length the former shot in again, and the ball cannoued through the goal off the upright. Ireland then attacked, butSpenoer’s shot went out. A good oentre byTopham gave Gilliat another chance, and hu scored for the third time with a magnificent shot, which Clugston had no chance of saving. Another attack by the Englishmen was well saved by Clugston. The ground was very heavy, and the superior weight of the English teamtold its tale quickly. They were now doingthewitfiniTsugtaksublwhose defenoe was at times sorely tried. Ireland played very plnckily, and at length put the ball through again* but the whistle had gone for a foul Smith scored again before the interval, when the score was—England 4* Ireland L After change of ends Topham was coaapicuons for some fiae runs. Two centres went out* and the third waa splendidly headed away by Stewart. England continued to hold the upper hand, but the defenoe was very sound, and defied all efforts to break through it. G. Smith hit the cross-bar, and Gilliat next shat out. Clugston was cheered for eeviag finely, from Gilliat* but a minute later Win ok worth scored a fifth goal with a long shot ftom the centre kick Ireland rushed up and forced a oorner* but it was badly taken by Small and waa easily got away. England again took up the attack* which was at length relieved by a good run. It resulted in a oorner, and Crawford tried an overhead shot but Charsley was ableto stop it He saved brilliantly again* and thenlands came awav andSandilands came away and scored. Ireland now pressed and Charsley cleared thrice.
