No vegetable substance is more durable when exposed to all the changes of the weather, as every person can testify, who has seen the f allen birches in the ■woods, where, when the wood has been Has been decayed by time, the bark remained sound and unchanged.These hats, whether covered with Cur, velvet, or plain silk, or left uncovered, possess the following advantages o- 1 ver all other hats, viz. They may be made lighter than any other hats, and the same time stronger in every part ; particularly at the edges of the crown, where all other hats fail. When properly made they 'vill stand all the storms i:i the wear of years : rever , admit the water, grow soft, or lose their . shape. Fur hats can be made for one third less than what hat* inferior in every respect, are now sold for.—English patent water-proof sattin beavers sell for from eight to ten dollars. They grow soft in the rain, lose their shape, are as heavy and unyielding to the head as i-ron, and art* as brittle as glass. The birch hats on the contrary arc li^ht, strong anti really water-proof; are elastic in the brim, set easy to the head, and may be made for an infinitely le ss I0 mprice. Six gitls can make 40 of these American sattin beavers, or as many j plain silk hats a (Jay,begiiv ing with peeling the bark and ending with covering and lining.—Ilats of the largest size either in brim or crown, covered with silk of the same quality as the J Leghorn. can i be made for less than sixty cents.
