No vegetable substance is more durable when exposed to all the changes of the weather, as every person can testily, who has seen the fallen birches in the woods, where, when the wood has been Has been decayed by time, the bark remained sound and unchanged.These hats, whether covered with (ur, velvet, or plain silk, or left uncovered, possess the following advantages o-ver all other hats, viz. They may he made lighter than any other hats, •\nd at the same time stronger in eve-ry part ; particularly at the edges of the crown, where ail other hats fail. When properly made they will stand all the storms in the wear oi years : never admit the water, grow soft, or lose their shape. 1* ur hats can he made for onethird less than what hats inferior in e very respect, are now sold for Englishpatent water-proof sattin beavers sell forfrom eight to ten dollars. They grow sol*, in the rain, lose their shape, are as lieavv and unyielding to the head as i-ron, and are as brittle as glass. The birch hats on the contrary arc light, strong and really water-proof; are clastic in the brim, set easy to the head, smd may be made for an infinite!/ less price. Six gills can make 40 of these American sattin beavers, or as many plain silk hats a day.hcgin? ingwithpeeling the hark and ending with covering and lining.—Ilats of the largest size either in brim or crown, covered with silk of the same quality as the Leghorn, can be made for less than sixty cents. Thev will he as light or lighter;' perfectly water proof, and will never sail, r perspiration or pomatum to penetrate them. The two last mentioned hats will outlast several coverings. Two girls can make 40 uncovered hats in :t day. One man can put the crowns and brims to as many fur hats as seven men can make in a d.iv. 1* ur and silic hats when greased or dirtied, may be washed perfectly clean without any apprehension lrom glu . \Y hen wet with the rain they may be wiped dry with a handkerchief or towel.A box thirty inches square ami twenty four in height, will hol l more birch than is required for the manufacture of twenty one hundred hats.”
