PANTA Staff Writer BARSTOW — A Daggett Mid dle School teacher who pleaded no contest to eight counts of in appropriately touching several underage girls is scheduled to begin his six-month jail term on Friday. Thomas Lee Mantey, who with drew his plea of not guilty Jan. 14 under the terms of a plea bargain agreement, is supposed to serve 180 days in San Bernardino County with credit for two weeks served, according to court records. Two misdemeanor counts of annoying or molesting a child un der 18 were dismissed under the plea bargain; the court records showed Mantey had been charged with eight counts. The 52-year-old defendant, who failed to show up for a court hearing in September after try ing to commit suicide, was or dered by Superior Court Judge John Gibson to be released for a period of 36 months on several conditions — one of which for bids him to associate with a fe male under 18. Mantey must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and cannot violate any law. He must also submit to a search and seizure at any time of the day by any law enforcement officer. Mantey taught sixth-grade sci ence and language arts at Daggett Middle School. He was arrested in February 1999 after San Bernardino County sheriff's detectives were alerted by re ports that Mantey improperly touched a number of his pupils. All eight charges were for in cidents between Sept. 1, 1998, and February 1999, with various “Jane Does” whose ages ranged from 11 to 13. Mantey had taught at Daggett Middle School for about 10 years.
