Topeka, Ks.f February 19.—The bill to change the name of Geary county back to Davis passed the house this morning, the vote standing 89 to 21. Menses. Brown of Harvey, Showalter, Webb, Hebei*, Reeder, Atherton, Simmons, Seaton, Keene, Pouoeon, Whittington, Warren, Willard, protested against the passage of the hill becauseit restored the memory of the archtraitor. Jefferson Davis. The statement tnat the name is in honor of Judge Davis of Illinois is declared false.The irrigation bill passed the house this afternoon. In the senate the Mohlei bill to suppress the publication and circulation of newspapers and other publications devoted to publishing criminal nows having special reference to the Kansas City Sunday Sun. was first considered, and after being slightly amended was passed by the following vote: Ayes 29, nays 0.Topeka. A protest, signed by every republican member and filed with the clerk, says that the bill enters upon the aUtt-ute hooks a falsehood, by declaring that the county was originally named for Judge David Davis of Illinois, when, in-fact, it was named “for that arch traitor, Jefferson Davis.’’ The protest continues: “The declaration that thecounty was originally named for DavidDavis is not only contradicted by the f ofwhole history of that period, but it is inconsistent with any theory of truthfulness, in the fact’that at that lime David Davis was serving his first term as a county judge in Illinois.Liberal quotations are made from the statutes of the year in which the county was named, showing that the legislature was controlled by the pro-slaveryofmen.
