by Bob Goode Pictured are the winners of the annual Women’s City Bowl ing Tournament which ended last Sunday. As usual with handi cap tournaments, the championships are “grab bag specials” with about everyone having an equal chance. However, the all events scratch title was no par ticular surprise — it went to Evelyn Whalen for the third straight year. Evelyn won the crown with a nifty 1670 total (a 185 average) for her nine games. For her that’s about par as she carries a three-league average of around 177. Evelyn shot 540 in singles, 555 in doubles, and 575 in the team event. Evelyn’s Major League ser ies last week is a good example of why she is such a consistent winner. Her 560 series included a 244 game that was all strikes except for a pair of splits. One of these was a 7-10 in the 10th frame as she was going for a Evelyn Whalen game in the 260’s. All-Event Scratch Ladies team champions are not pictured here. This event was won by a Biggsville, Ill., team, Warrington Insurance. On this team are Edna Richmond, Ida Heinrich, Catherine Oaks, Della Bultemeier, and Janet Chambers. Most profitable “tournament” of the season was won 3 times last week. That would be the leaded pin gimmick at the Burlington Bowl. Lou Boves conceived the idea of building up a set of pins to four pounds each with lead weights in the bot tom and then letting bowlers try to shoot a 210 game against them for a cash prize. Local bowlers tore into this with a passion, and 140 and 150 games blosomed forth like spring flowers and the jackpot soared to $157. Then Darwin Vacha of Washington, Town, came to town. He is one of the state’s better shooters. Vacha bowled 11 games without success, then hit 231 on his 12th try and took home all the money. On Thursday Charlie Morris, a bowler in the Henderson County Farm Bureau League, beat it again with a 210 score, good for $30. Following the Major League Friday, Cy Dorothy became the third winner with a 220 game. The Bowl-Inn team won a few nickels and dimes in the low paying Jacksonville, Ill., tournament last weekend. Brothers Jim and Don Dixon shot 1248 in doubles. In singles Don Dixon shot 667, Bob Goode 658, and Maurie Smith 626. All these three game totals include handicap. Three local winners have been announced in the Iowa State Christmas Youth Bowling Tournament. Peggy Cecil won 8th place in singles for girls 8 to 12 years and Sandra Wagner won 10th place. Annette Pranger was 7th in singles for girls 13 to 15 years. SKIPPING AROUND THE LEAGUES, Gary Kirby put to gether the highest series of his bowling career Wednesday in the Continental League. Gary shot games of 241, 201, and 190 for a 632 series. Art Nelson with 257 and Bernard Wagner with 252 were the big shooters in the Church League. However, neither came close to a 600 series. Harold Morawitz doubled up in the 10th frame to score a 252 game in the Industrial League, second highest of the season in that league. Harold shot a 573 series for the evening. When the Men’s Classic League’s Hawkeye Motors team shot an 851 game on their final try Wednesday it broke a 10 game streak of games over the 900 mark.
