Cairo, Feb. 22—The Khalifa has left Sherkita and is moving northwards with considerable force. He has been fiercely raiding the Arabs along the route he is following, and the latter have become panic stricken. Major McDonald, head of the British expedition which has been explor ing East Africa, has started for Omdurman. A Londons News despatch ‘from Cairo says the Kalifa is advancing upon Amdur man with between 15,000 and 20,000 men. Preparations are urgently proceeding to meet him. The factas are that Col. Kitchener's scouts came in touch with the Khalifa strongly entrenched with 16,000 men, and the British officers having only a small force, found it necessary to retire to Omdurman. The retirement from the Khalifa was regarded by him as a sign of weakness,and led him to raly his forces to advance. Kitchener has 9,000 men at Omdurman. Tragic Death of R. W. Jamieson, M. P. for Winnipeg RW. Jameson, M. P., of McDermott Ave., Winnipeg, accidentally shot himself on Tuesday night, and expired instantly. The funeral takes place on Friday. His life insurance amounted to about $25,000. Monopoly Thwarted for Once. The complaint of the Sun Oil Refining Company .Against the tariffs of the Grand Trunk and Canadian Pacific railways upon oil, which are discriminating against them, came before the railway committee of the privy council at Ottawa this afternoon. Wasrt Wrowxo, the Galician’ boy who accidently shot himself last Monday, is still living, though very low. The bullet has not yet been extracted. Tus Hearstex challenge cup, presented for hockey competition has to be won three successive years before being owned out right by any competing club. The trophy has only been played for once. Not twice as reported in last issue, Couty Fraser, fur trader, came in from Chipewyan on Monday. He came by dog train to Lac la Biche and from there by team. There are no Klondike parties wintering near Chipewyan, the nearest ones being at Resolution. Mr. Fraser will wait for open water before returning. Joax Borwick, who came in from Whit ford yesterday, reports that around that setlement there is no snow whatever. Castle are grazing and prairie fires are burning in the woods and on the open. He ad to come up on the river all the way from Vistoria in order to get sleighing. Another traveller, Cecil Armitatead, who came in from Lae 8¢. Kernohan, and Miles Decaster returned on Monday from Golden where they have been employed by the Golden lumber company. RB. Sxconp returned on Monday from a business trip to Beaver lake. Snow was entirely gone from around the lake on Saturday. C. MARKER, manager of government creameries for Alberta, has returned to Cal gary and will visit Edmonton shortly to arrange for the opening of business for the season. A uxstime to discuss Territorial and ublic matters will be held by F. Villeneuve, L. A., in the Sturgeon schoolhouse on Friday evening, March 3rd. Meeting com mences at 8.30. Worn has been received by McDougall Secord that Angus Morrison who took some freight for them to Lesser Slave ‘Iake, had reached them eafely in two weeks from Ed monton with the freight in good condition. Ixsr. Rou Teppe was expected to reach Chipewyan on his return trip about Jan. Slat. Fur is reported scarce around Chip ewyan, and many of the Indians are starv ing. There was about three feet of snow at Chipewyan when Fraser and Loutit left, but at Lac la Biche it was no deeper than at Edmonton. A Reciva despatch in the Winnipeg Telegram says that J. Mr. Skelton, the pre sident of the Battleford Liberal association, was sentenced on the 16th, by Mr. Justice Maguire to two months imprisonment for perjury in connection with an affidavit pro curing the dismissal of Mr. J.B. Mercer, the late postmaster at Battleford, now of Edmonton. Thomas Dewan got one month for the same offence. Daunais, the Indian agent at Battleford, about whose guilt in the same matter the jury disagreed at the last sitting of the court, will come up for trial next time the court sits at Battleford. A MEETING was held yesterday afternoon in E. Raymer’s rooms to consider the ad visibility of establishing a club in Edmont on. The meeting was well attended by representative business men and the project was heartily received and supported. After considerable discussion as to ways and means, the following committee was ap pointed to canvass the town for members (not to exceed fifty in number): Mesara, A. Taylor, G. R. F. Kirkpatrick, R. A. Ruttan and Dr. McInnis. The committee was authorized to collect $5 from each member and also to do all acts necessary for the organization of the proposed club. An other meeting will be held on the call of the committee. Tur Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Re porter, of eb. 6th, publishes a report of the death on Rat River, near Fort Mac pherson, in September last of Joseph Mayer, of that place. The news was received by telegraph from Edmonton, 1m the same paper it is stated that Mayer wrote to his ‘wife from Dawson on Nov. 17th stating that he and the party had reached Dawson on Sept. 10th, and had been in employment since Sept. 21at. Mayer was one of the Lefrancois party who went down the Mac kensie Jhat spring. Mr.‘ and Mrrs.. Le francois returned to Woonsocket, but Louis Mayer, his father Joseph Mayer, Olivier Bossy and Joseph Frament went through to Dawson. The telegram from Edmonton was no doubt concocted in Woonsocket, as tho news has been received here from Rat River as late as Nov. lat, A MANITOBA PIONEER. Free Preax, Feb. 20: : Death has claimed another Manitoba pioneer in the person of Mra. Dunlop, relict of ‘Thomas Dunlop, who passed peacefully away at the ripe old age of 76 years, on Saturday Inez, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry McQuade, Prairie Grove. De ceased had been, gradually, failing for the past four months, but no serious apprehen sions were entertained until about a week previous to her death. She was one of the oldest settlers in Winnipeg, coming here with her husband and family from Prescott, Ont., in 1870, ‘and has resided here ever since. The funeral takes place to-day ‘at 1 o'clock from the home of her daughter to Prairie Grove cemetery. She leaves to mourn her Joss, besides a large circle of friends, the following children: Mrs. JR. Boland and Mrs. Dr. Munro, of this city ; Mrs. Henry McQuade and William Dunlop, Prairie Grove; Mr. Samuel Dunlop, of Plympton ; Mrs. 8. Dunlop, of Valleyfield, Quebec, and Mr. Alex.
