Feb. 22, 1987Public TV stationmoves into studioKTSC plans to add new local showsBy Brad JohnsonGazette TelegraphSouthern Colorado’s public television station, KTSC, Channel 8, received a big shot in the arm in 1986 as it completed a new facility.The $1 million Buell Communications Center is located on the University of Southern Colorado campus in Pueblo. But the station serves all of Southern Colorado, from Monument to New Mexico. It also extends from Kansas to DelNorte. ^ .y.11 -The building was financed by a $700,000 grant from the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation, $150,000 from the city of Pueblo, and $150,000 from Colorado taxpayers.The new facility, designed specifically for televison, has a 50-square-foot studio with computerized lighting, an editing suite, a production master control room with state-of-the art videographicscapability, administrative offices and a teleconference center.“For the first time in our 16-year history,” said general manager Greg Sinn, “our staff will be under one roof.“The building gives us an image of permanency. We will no longer have the illusion that we could possibly be shutting down in a month.”The station employs 23 full-time and two part-time employees. About 45 percent of its $1.3 million budget comes from memberships, about 60 percent of which are held by Colorado Springs residents.Another 25 percent of the budget comes from federal grants. The state kicks in 20 percent and businesses and foundations contribute another 10 percent.The station airs a variety of programs daily from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., including six hours of instructional television for classroom use ingrades K-12.
