Floats the dirt, right down the drain...” Suddenly, she realized what he had meant all these years, and she crossed to him, saying quietly, ‘. .. my, but you don’t know vat goot iss until you try mama’s Pennsylvania Dutch eye noodles . . .” This, in words, is what pop art is on canvas. By Tom Wilson Pocono Record Reporter EASTON — Beauty is in the eye of the beholder — and so is art. There are many schools of thought on what makes an ob ject of art. And the newest school is that of pop art. Pop art. “What's that?’ you ask. Well, it may be a blown up photo of an orange. Or a painting of an everyday mail box. Or a Ballantine beer can. Pop art is the use of adver tising or everyday commercial objects in an “artistic” way. There are about one doté¢n such objects of pop and op art presently on display at Lafay ette University in Easton. Op art is the use of lines or circles in such a way as to create an optical illusion. Dr. Johannes A. Gaertner, professor of languages and fine arts, and art historian at La fayette, is in charge of the ex hibit, which opened Saturday. Eye amusement He described op art as ‘an amusement of the eye. You first see an extreme regularity, but your eyes give it a certain moment. “Pop art is an amusement of the mind. It is not to be taken entirely serious. It is happy art and should make you smile,” Dr. Gaertner said. The exhibit, entitled, “Em blems Public and Private,”” is the first show of New York pop art to be held in North eastern Pennsylvania, Dr. Gaertner reported. ‘The original intent of pop art was ironic. People said that we are surrounded with art — the art that touches the masses,” Dr. Gaertner said. “They felt that our environ ment is no longer one of green fields and happy peasants, but more modern things. Pop art has the shock of recognition,’ he added. “When I first saw these things I had my doubts, but after handling them for two days I love them. I am happy when I walk into this room,” Dr. Gaertner continued. “Pop art tries to be art with out a capital A. It’s gay and amusing,” Dr. Gaertner said. When asked why an artist would paint a mailbox rather than just take its picture, Dr. Gaertner said, “Photos are overly explicit. If you analyze this painting you would find it has tiny irregularities.” How long fast Dr. Gaertner said he can't predict how long the pop art craze will last, but he said it won't last long. “Modern art movements tend to become shorter in time. I predict that possibly art will predict that possibly art will yearly changes,” he said. OE Surrealistically pop art, the New York Herald Tribune's Sunday New York magazine yesterday ran a picture of the Statue of Liberty on its cover to illustrate an article on the mower New York woman. The statue wore false eye lashes and blue and green eye shadow with gold glitter. It's eyebrows were mascaraed. At the Lafayette pop art show, against the granite wall hung “Barbara” by Marjorie Strider, displaying her radish for the curious, (Staff Photo by Wilson)
