Inkom, Portneuf DistrictsVote Down Reorganization PlanBy Bill Hansen POST Staff Writer Proposed reorganization of school districts within Bannock county to create one class A district of Pocatello, Inkom and Portneuf districts was defeated, while a similar proposal to consolidate schools in the Marsh Valley area in a class A district passed, unofficial returns from most precincts showed Saturday night.School electors of Inkom, voting 37 to 109 against the proposal, and electors in the Portneuf district, opposing the measure 7 to 15, defeated a Pocatello vote of 72 to 6 in favor of the consolidation. A majority vote in each of the districts was necessary for approval of the consolidation.In voting for consolidation of Bannock County Class A District No. 2 to include Lava Hot Springs, Arimo, -McCammon, Downey, Swan Lake, Robin Virginia and Hawkins Basin schools, electors voted forthe consolidation by a margin of 101 votes. Results from the Hawkins Basin school district had not been received but voting was expected to be so light in that area results could not be changed. • Unofficial tabulations showed the consolidation was not favored in Lava Hot Springs and McCammon districts, but overwhelming vote in favor of the reorganization in Arimo and Virginia carried the issue.“Under the reorganization law. because of the refusal of Inkom residents to allow their district to be incorporated into a district with Pocatello, the Inkom school district will revert to a class C district on July 1, 1949,” Scott D. Lowe, Bannock county schools superintendent said following the election.“This means that Inkom w^y lose its status as an independent district, and consequently its high school. He said if residents wished to reconsider the matter, and meet with the reorganization committee, a spcial election could be called. He did not say if the election was probable, however.In the Bancroft area, electors voted to change their independent district to a Class B district. Few changes in administration of the district would result, Lowe said. One change would be reduction of number of trustees from six to five.Tabulations of votes from the districts was as follows: jPocatello—lor consolidation, 66; against:ufl: -«»kom; including Portneuf district, for consolidation, 37, against, 109.For creation of Class A No. 2 district: Swan Lake, for, 30, against, 16; Robin, for 23, against 9; Arimo, for 183, against 1; McCammon. for 61, against 75; LavaHot Springs, for 81, against, 154;Virginia, for 29. against 0; Downey, for 128, against 79.Vote in the Bancroft district was 167 to 7 in favor of change of the district from independent to class B.
