The Sul Ross Lobos grabbed two victories at Kokernot Field in their first homestand of the season, stunning national powers Lubbock Christian College 4-3 and Western New Mexico University 10-9. Sul Ross pitcher Rowdy Brown held the powerful LCC Chaparrals hitless through three innings. Then in the bot tom of the third, lead-off hitter Brett Parker got on board on an LCC error. Lobo center fielder Tuti Moreno followed Parker with a sharp single. Parker made it home and Moreno advanced to second as LCC’s attempt to get the Sul Ross runner at the plate failed. Eddie Duarte came to the plate and kept the rally going with a deep sacrifice fly that moved Moreno to third. With one away, Lobo designat ed hitter Chuck Gomez drilled an RBI single to score Moreno as the Lobos took a 2-0 lead. Brown continued to hold the Chaps off for another inning. But in the fifth, he gave up a triple, a walk and a wild pitch as the Lubbock bunch evened the score at 2-2. The game remained tied until the seventh when LCC got a runner to first on a walk. The Chaps’ baserunner stole second to move into scoring position. Brown took out the next two LCC batters with a ground out to third baseman Kent Parr and a pop-up to Moreno. With two away, LCC slugger Randy Velverde came to the plate and stroked a single to score the runner from second and give the Chaps a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. LCC brought on relief pitch er Joe Benavides to face Sul Ross catcher Glenn Nohavitza, and on the second pitch, Nohavitza sent the ball on a homerun ride over the left field wall to even the score at 3-3. Benavides struck out Moreno but lost control and walked Parker and Duarte. Relief pitcher Jeff Young replaced Benavides for LCC as the Chaos tried to protect the tie. With runners on first and second, Gomez came to the plate and sliced a long single to center. Parker rounded third and slid in home under the tag to give Sul Ross the win. Brown was credited with the win, allowing four hits in seven innings. Gomez was two of three for two RBIs and the game winning hit. Nehavitza had the homer and picked off two LCC runners on attempted steals. In Saturday’s contest, WNMU came out red hot, scor ing eight runs in the first three innings on three home runs, a triple, two doubles and a single. But Coach Byron Brooks’ Lobos countered with a six-run second inning of their own. The Sul Ross team managed four walks and a single before Duarte stepped to the plate to hit a bases-loaded triple. Duarte continued to provide the Lobo power, blasting an opposite-field home run in the fifth to cut the Mustang lead to 8-7. The Mustangs picked up an insurance run in the top half of the seventh when Davey Lopez hit a triple and then made it home after a wild pitch. Trailing 9-7 going into the bottom of the last inning, the Lobos buckled down. Moreno laid down a bunt to make it to first and then advanced to second on a Western throwing error. Duarte grounded out to second, and Gomez came to the plate with one out. Gomez watched the fast-ball throwing of Mike Kesler through the 2-2 count, picked his pitch and sent the ball on a trip over the wall. The home run and two RBI’s tied Jarrett made it to first on a walk, and Kesler struck out Russell McGuairt for the second out. With two away, Judd Ryan came on to slash a single into center, and Western brought shortstop Lopez to the mound in relief. But Lopez had control prob lems and walked Lobo Jeff Parnell to load the bases. With Nehavitza at the plate, Lopez could only manage one strike, walking in the winning run for the Lobos. Pitcher Johnny Guerrero was credited with the win, and Duarte had four RBIs on a triple and a homer. Gomez went two for three with a single and the home run that tied the game. In other action during the weekend, the Lobos dropped the opening contest to Western 2-1. In the last game of the series, the Mustangs showed their depth by knocking the Lobos out of the ballpark 16-2. The Lobos are on the road for a while, but will return to Eobernot Field March 6 for a home stand against Texas Tech University, the game at 9-9 with designat ed hitter Bob Jarrett at the plate for the Lobos.
