THE UNIVERSITY VOICE February 21, 1974 Page 5Mr- Mixcus for F.U.S.A. President.Paul Giangarra 75Room InjusticeTo the Editor:Members of the senior class can remember the fiasco of room sign-ups during their freshman year. The “first come, first serve policy involved an all night vigil in Loyola lounge if one was to get a decent room. The lottery system which replaced this was a vast improvement and benefitted both students and administration. There is, however, what we consider to be a fault with this system. If the opportunity of retaining one’s room from one year to the next were abolished, the resultant situation would be fairer to upperclassmen and more convenient for the administration.Twenty four freshman presently reside in Far East. In all likelihood they will retain their rooms, thus depriving upperclassmen of the opportunity of living in a new dorm with superior facilities. Freshmen now living in Far East may not agree with this proposal; however, three years from nowthey will hopefullymnderstahd the fairness of reserving preferred dorms for upperclassmen. There will still be freshmen living in preferred dorms as long as there are seniors who continue to sign for rooms and later leave to live on the beach. But this system will prevent a student from retailing a preferred room for four years. As regards the administration, this suggestion will eliminate the need for all special lotteries with which we have been plagued in the past. This will also help to eliminate some of the special forms needed under the present system. It is our hope that by eliminating the option of retaining one’s room this system will provide the opportunity for the greatest number of students to live in a preferred dorm for at least one or two years.Sincerely yours, James T.
