The Gale-Ethrick Redmen and Independence were two of the area prep basketball teams to survive the opening round tests in Wiscon sin tournaments which got under way Monday night. The Gales and Independence, competing in the Independent Sub district, defeated Fountain City 2- 54 and Trempealeau 70-49, res pectively. Winners at Osseo were Osseo of the Mississippi Valley Conference, wby an 84-52, scored over Granton, and Fairchild in a 57-49 upset of ‘Alma Center. Scoring extremes at Gilmanton found Eieva Strum clamping the Dunn County Aggies 67-27 and Gil manton losing to Elk Montro 90-64. Arkansaw and Plum City teams , advanced in the first round of the ‘Alma Subdistrict. Plum City de feated Pepin 72-54 and Arkansaw e eliminated Maiden Rock, 59-41. Only area tournament action scheduled tonight is in the Cash ton-West Salem district. At Cash ton, Norwalk meets Onalaska and Bangor plays Cashton, while at West Salem, Holmen meets Mel rose and West. Salem plays Min doro. The pace steps up Wednesday night with the following games scheduled . Gale-Hatrick ‘played without its 6-3 center, Paul Twesme, who was home with the flu, but Jack Kindseby scored 23 points to fill the breech. Kindsehy hit seven field goals in the second half and scored eight points in the fourth quarter as the Gales rallied from a 30-26 halftime deficit to defeat Fountain City. Galesville was behind by seven points with 10 minutes left to play, Barton Lund added 12 points to Galesville’s cause. High scorers for Fountain City were Dick Heit man Who had 16 points, Dave Far rand with 15 and Deward Grossell with 32, Independence jumped to a 34-15 halftime lead and coasted in with a victory over Trempealeau. Bob Maule scored 19 and Bill Maule 13 for Independence. Jim Fernholz led Trempealeau with 14. , Top scoring effort of the night was 37 points by Plum, City’s Jim Qberding in the victory over Pepin. Oberding hit 12 field goals and 13 of 14 free throws. Jim Blomstrom added 18 for Plum City. Vern Seifert scored 29 and Peters 13 for Pepin. Leading Arkansaw past Maiden Rock was Bob Drier with 20 points’ and Clyde Manmore and Ed Luth er With 12 apiece.
