Jacks Sweep Tempe SeriesTo Even Bulldog DeleatWild Passes and Shots Slow up Game Friday EveningLed by Chub Overson and Hod Crumley the Axemen trounced the Bulldogs here Friday night 38-23 in a very listless game. The Axemen were slow getting started but they gathered steam as the game progressed.Tempe having won two from the locals earlier in the season took the floor a slight favorite.The game started slow, the Lumberjacks showing none of the ability they displayed against the Wildcats the previous week-end.Bendixon opened with a foul shot that put the Axemen in the lead 1-0. Swede later came through with a field goal after Tempe had taken the a 5-1 lead, due largely to their ability in making foul shots. Allen tied the score 5-5 with .a field goal. Overson shoved the Mc-Creary men into the lead with a beautiful field goal, making theBOX SCORESFriday NightShipkey sent in Bill Mouget and Snooky Woods to strengthen the Tempe offense, but this proved a futile effort as the Axemen went into a 10 to 5 lead five minutes before the time was up in the first period.Both teams went wild, passing and shooting from all over the floor. As the horn sounded ending the half Flagstaff was leading 13-10. / ,The second half opened with Flagstaff counting three baskets in rapid succession. Crumley and Pratt had replaced Clarence Cox and Gove Allen respectively.Don Cox proved a power on defense the second half wfth the aid of Swede Bendixon and kept the Tempe forwards practically smothered through the latter part of the game.Early in the second half Bud Wi/isor left the #floor a-la-person-nl foul rouge-to be followed in a few minutes'*by Ham Pratt.At this stage the game - turned into a massacre as the road-weary Bulldogs began to falter.Both clubs were very ragged at the end, resulting in many long shots by both aggregations.The final whistle found Flagstaff on the lonfc end of the score, 88-23.Tempe Overcomes Big Lead to Threaten Flagstaff in Last HalfFlagstafffKftpfpt*C. Saturday night.Crumley opened the scoring with a field goal, but Tempe came buck strong and led 0-3 us Olsen looped one from long range.It was apparently a battle of forwards during the first half, with Overson and Crumley having a slight edge over Woods and Olsen. Flagstaff wffs leading 25-It* at the half wilh Tempo a constant throat. As the teams took the flotfi* after the rest period Shipkey sent Cren-kito ami Millet at forwards and Mouget at center.The Tempe defense tightened and Cove Allen went upon an ineffective long shot spree. Cren-kitc got hot and cut the Flagstaff lead to five points with 13 minutes to plav. Tuckey substituted for Lillico, who left the game with four personal fouls. Mouget and Schuler came through to cut the Lumberjack leud to three point* and six minutes to go.Crumley and Bendixon were ejected fyom the game almost simultaneously.Score stood 34-31 for Flagstaff and four minutes to go. The locals dropped Uack on defense and held tight. Winsor looped a basket to make the score 34-33' Flagstaff. Olsen tied the count with a foul shot. Two minutes to go. At this point Tom Lillico decided to help the timekeeper, and later caused a dispute.Tuckey threw in a foul to put the Bulldogs one point ahead and 40 seconds to play.With five seconds to play Gove Allen dribbled around and looped a beautiful shot from near center to win the game.
