They are IJeut. John Drennan. while still able bodied, is forced to retire on a pension. Pa* trolman William F. Riedel, and Lieut. Herman A. Fritz. Riedel is given an opportunity to resign and Fritz is reduced to sergeant.But few people in Duluth sympathize with Commissioner Hicken’s treatment of the three police officers. Of course some one had to be the goat, and it wras the easiest thing in the world to get the three officers in question.Lieut. John Drennan is the oldest serving member of the Duluth Police department. lie joined the department when twenty-one years of age, and had he been permitted to actively serve until next July he would have rounded out thirty years of active service. That is. a long time, but ample to ascertain whether or not an afficcr was competent.Exceeded Its Authority.The grand jury had no business to make any recommendations to Commissioner Hicken that it would not make to the court.
