John W. “Bud” Fowler (Jackson), a New York native, was paid to play ball when he joined an all-white Newcastle, Pa. team. Over the next 12 years, Fowler made a name for himself as a fearsome second baseman with Keokuk of the Western League. The team soon disbanded, but Powell continued playing ball with no fewer than 10 other white baseball teams scattered across the country, including five in Lafayette, Evansville, Terre Haute, Crawfordsviile and Galesburg, Ind.Thminli him nfko** AffJnnM
