Hymel said.Betty Jean Huff, 42, and Thomas E. Lindsey, 40, will face reduced penalties as a result of their agree-Louisianament, which also requires them to cooperate with prosecutors in the ongoing investigation into a third suspect, Betty Jean Love, 27.More people could be indicted in the conspiracy as a result of Huff'sand Lindsey's help, said Stan Lemelle, the attorney handling thecase.“The investigation is continuing beyond those three, Lemelle said. Lemelle would not specify whatrole other possible suspects might have played in the alleged scheme. Huff, Lindsey and Love wereindicted Oct. 20 on charges they conspired to pay for votes in aMarch 12, 1996, election in Greensburg. All three, who were involved in campaigns for alderman candidates, initially pleaded innocent. Prosecutors did not identify the candidates or say who benefited from the alleged vote-buyingscheme.Witnesses have testified that the going rate was about $75 per vote, Lemelle said.Initially. Huff and Lindsey faced numerous counts carrying up to fi\e years each in prison. But because of their plea, they now face a maximum of five years in prison and$250,000 in fines, Lemelle said.The alleged scheme involved at least IK voters, who are identified in the indictment only by initials.» wPeople were paid or offered money to vote during the absentee voting period prior to election day, the indictment savs.
