by Kevin Nooreske Staff Writer The men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to Grinnell last Saturday for the Iowa Small Colleges State Swimming Championship. The meet includ ed teams from Coe, Cornell, Grinnell, Buena Vista, Luther, and Loras. The women successfully de fended their State Champion ship title by outdistancing con ference rival and runner-up team Grinnell, 140 to 124. En route to their state title the women won 11 of the 16 events. The winners were: Marie Stril ich (100 Back, 100 Free, 200 M.); Jennifer Gaard (200 Fly, 200 Back); Jami Whittemore (200 Free, 500 Free); Brigette Bergemann (100 Fly); Lynn Pumfrey (50 Free); 200 Medley Relay (Gaard, Pumfrey, Berge mann, Whittemore); and 200 Free Relay (Bergemann, Gaard, Strilich, Whittemore). The wom en ended the meet on a high note by qualifying the 200 Freestyle Relay for the NCAA Division III National Swimming Championship. The Men’s team took a close third, losing to Grinnell and Luther, by a score of 147 to 69 to 65. Although the men had only one individual winner (Kevin Novreske - 200 Fly), they swam a highly competitive meet. The next meet is Friday and Saturday as the Coe women defend their Conference Cham pionship. The Women’s Mid western Athletic Conference Championship will be hosted by Coe, so come cheer our women’s team to victory Coe Wrestlers Fall To Buena Vista by Bob Davison Staff Writer The number four ranked Div ision III wrestling team flexed its muscles February 15 in Eby fieldhouse. The Buena Vista Beavers defeated Cornell 43-10 and Coe 43-7, losing only five of 20 matches. The Coe grapplers also lost to Cornell 29-15 on Saturday. After forfeiting at 118 pounds, the Rams won the next four matches until Kohawk Roger Claeys (9-9 on the season) won at 158 pounds to cut the Cornell lead to 17-9. Eric Turner (19-7-1) brought Coe to within two points with a pin at 167. Cornell then won the next three matches to close out the dual. In the Buena Vista match, Coe’s only winner was Grant Eckenrod at 126 while Tupper drew at 167. Coe finished the regular sea son at 2-3 while Cornell ended at 5-5. Buena Vista concluded with a 18-2 record. On February 22, Coe travels to Ripon for the Midwest Con ference tournament.
