HUBBARD—The Reed Middle School seventh grade basketball team captured second place in the annual ‘‘Seventh and Eighth Grade Basketball Tournament” last week at the Roosevelt gym. The young Eagle cagers, under the direction of John Clemente defeated Mercer, 45-28 in opening round play. The locals then beat Warren East, 28-14 in the semi-finals but fell short in the championship game to Canfield 43-12. Things were not as fortunate for the Reed “Eighth” grade squad as they fell in the opening round, 24-22 to Girard. The tournament was under the direction of Rich Buchenic, connected on eight of eleven free throws and added ten points from the field to take a 47-18 third quarter lead. The fourth and final frame, both coaches substituted freely and the Lady Eagles posted the 18 point victory. Cara Hendrix paced all scorers with 22 points, while Missy Balash and Carla Hendrix had 12 and 9 points, respectively. Reserve, with the loss fell to 6-13. Earlier in the week the Lady Eagles posted their 14th win of the campaign with a 58-32 victory over Chaney. The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 8 0 lead and never trailed in the game. The locals posted leads at all quarter breaks, 16-10, at one, 34-14 at intermission and 43-25 at the end of three. Cara Hendrix continued her assault on opponents with 25 points, while Missy Balash notched 17. Chaney, who fell to 4-11 was paced by Michelle Drummond and Sue Close with ten points apiece. The Lady Eagle junior varsity squad split during the week with a win over Chaney but dropped a 37-29 decision to Warren Reserve. The Lady Eagle J.V.’s concluded their season with a 6-11 record. RECEIVES GAME BALL—Hubbard’s Cara Hendrix was presented the game ball in which she broke the all time school record for most points in a career, in ceremonies last week at the high school.
