sideChicano Music Dominatesthe Profit Scene in Texas...Many areas of music are big business across the Lone Star State, but none as financially profitable as Chicano music.Ballrooms in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley, specializing solely in Spanish-related music, are all doing a thriving business booking groups which are making more money than most nationally-known musicians.One of the state’s top Chicano music distributors is[ohnny Gonzales of Dallas.* _Gonzales, from his small plant in northwest Dallas, ships out thousands of records each week to points throughout the world, while his El Zarapc record line controls many of the top artists currently on the circuit.“There is a distinct difference between true Spanish music and the Chicano music played by such groups as Augustine Ramirez or Joe Bravo,” Gonzales explains. “The type of music popularwith the Mexican-Americanthroughout Texas has more of a Tex-Mex flavor and features guitars, drums and horns rather than violins and mar-achas.”In the sixties, Gonzales built his music company around a group from Temple known as Little Joe and the Latineers and guided their destinv formanv vears on the Chicano• ^circuit. After Little Joe split from the company to produce his own records, Gonzales discovered Augustine Ramirez,currently the top draw on the latin music scene. Describedas the Mexican-Americans’Elvis Presley, Ramirez sellsby charlie britethousands of records each month and plays nightly forfees of $1,500 to $2,000.AUGUSTINE RAMIREZ“Groups such as ours which play Chicano music never make the big money that some of the popular Anglo groups make,” Ramirez explains, “but we are booked more regularly and sell more records per release.”Sunnv and the Sunliners was the Chicano group that started the big money flowing in Texas for this tvpe of band back in the early sixties. FromSan Antonio, Sunnv and his counterparts placed their future in the hands of Houston promoters Huey .Vleaux and Foy Lee, who then ownedTeardrop Records, and hit na-with a song entitled “Talk To Me.” Meanwhile, another San Antonio group called the Sunglows, who had worked with Sunny prior to his success, climbed the national charts on the strength of a song entitled “Peanuts,” while Rene Rene, a Laredo duet, follower! with a nationwide hit called “Angelito.”Despite these groups’ national recognition, a band from Edinburg in the Rio Grande Valley was playing a different type of Mexicanmusic and outselling everyone in Texas at that time. Cajunto Bernal, led by Paulino Bernal, introduced modem cajunto music to the Southwest and becamewealthy in the process.
