By ANITA DIXON Grog, helped bring home Kent State’s fifth basketball win and first conference victory of the season against Toledo University last Saturday night. The hairy eight-foot-tall ‘B.C.’ character was invited to the game by the Toledo cheerleaders when the Rockets played at Kent State Jan. 27. Being a gentleman, Greg accepted. When he and his nine companions arrived in Toledo in a university van rented by Chestnut League, he was greeted with open arms by everyone but the Toledo ticket manager and some children at the game. All the ticket manager could say when Grog walked to the window for his ticket was, ‘‘No one told me Grog was coming. Why didn’t anyone tell me Grog was coming?” After getting past the bewildered man at the ticket office, Grog was introduced to the fans by the announcer at the request of the Toledo cheerleaders. Grog then introduced himself to Toledo’s mascot, the rocket, by sticking his tongue out at him. The crowd cheered and Grog entered the hearts of the Toledo fans on Valentine’s Day. Some of the fans, under the age of 10, became so attached to him that they amputated his right arm. Grog then aked for and received police protection by Toledo's security force. “His arm is easily reparable,’’ said Mike Michalak, one of Grog’s companions. “‘At half-time I looked away for a moment and heard the announcer say, ‘and here’s the Homecoming Queen of Podunk University,’ and it was Grog dancing in the middle of the court-all by himself,’ Westcott, Grog’s navigator, said. Toledo fans won’t soon forget Saturday night, nor are they likely to forget Grog. To Grog it was just another night’s work.
