Tuesday morning of last week. On Wednesday before he acted as pall bearer at the funeral of Judge Lowry, and was tn excellent health. On Sunday he complained of fueling unwell, and a physician was summoned, who pronounced the cose an attack of bilious colic. Dr. Gibson, of Jamestown, n brother-in-law, was telegraphed, but was too iH to come, and this news seemed to greatly depress Str. Powell, and be began to express doubts about Ills recovery, on Mon-day, however, the symptoms were more favorable, and that night Dr. Ely, whoafctended him, retired about 10 o'clock .believing hLs patient out of danger; bntaboutl o’clock he was past all hope of recovery; and at 2 o'clock breathed his lash Howell Powell was born near Utica, New York, March 11th, 1801, the fourth child of AYatkfn and Sarah Powell, who landed inNew York from 'Wales in May, 1S01. While living at Utica, Margaret, Ilowell'David, Jonathan and Edward were born, anu their mother and Jonathan died. The father was innr-rwi to A fra. Nicholas, widow with three children, John, Ann and Margaret, the first named being Dr. John Nicholas, of Vernon township, a well known citizen, whose death occurred last year. Sarah Powell was born near Utica, in I81;i, and in February of the next, year the family removed to Crawford county,settling lu Spring township, on the farm upon which Howell died.From 182*5 to IS32 Mr. Powell was constable orsnringtowfiship-inimo he was the Whig candidate for Sheriff, b*it was defeated; In 18-54 he vf2Vi elected to tho lower house of the Legislature. He was an original abolitionist, and a member of the first an it-slavery socle tv organized in that county. He was always the determined foe of intemperance, and one of the leaders in the temperance cause In this State.
