This portion of the state is capable of producing the finest fru.it in the world, and it is all the time coining into better favor with the people of the East. There was a time only a few years ago when the walnuts from Italy were considered far and away fcjhe finest nut on themarket, but this state has pushed them;« . •out so that last year I sold walnuts from this section at an advance of bnei -cent over the Italian.“With the exception of the; Malaga clusters, California raisins now bringthe highest prices in the market. I took the first carload ‘ of raisins east that was shipped from Fresno, $nd was warned that there was no use .putting them in competition with those of the Mediterranean, Npw they are standard.“The only fruit that seriously competes with ours here is the Dalianlemon. Southern California lemons_ ... , ~Aare considered superior to them in*every respect save one, and that is the keeping quality* which is a. serious item. Take a box of each variety, with I the same number of lemons in the box*4 ' . 1and each California lemon .will be• •equal to one and a halt of the other fruit in weight and acid quality. ButAthey decay easily, where the foreign fruit lasts well, being cured by a superior process,- hot understood here. During cold weather the twolruits bring equal prices,., but late in the winter the Italian fruit is sold at a higher figure, for the reason of its keeping quality.
