1-290 ExtensionThe news that one of the proposed extensions of Route 290/ from Route 495 toward Boston, might well go through parts of Stow-Maynard-Concord should give some pause for consideration. The fact that the implementation of this plan is perhaps a decade away should not prevent local citizens and municipal officials from looking into the effect of such a freeway in our midst. Would the industry that it might attract overshadow the fact of increased traffic in an already congested suburban area? What of the many families in Stow and Maynard that would be displaced by the roadway, not to mention the general chaos that would result from the months and perhaps years of construction? What are the benefits of the road and whatare its drawbacks? it is not too soon to look at the problem and begin to formulate alternative answers. If the local communities decide that they don't want the road they must be prepared for a long and expensive series of legal battles. Some may say that the extension of 1-290 is inevitable, but in an atmosphere of changing priorities, and with new outlooks on ecology, it would be unfair to simply throw up our collective hands at the prospect of the roadway. On the other hand, we might discover that there are benefits to be gained from having such a concrete ribbon weaving through the Assabet Valley. Whatever the conclusion ... we should ask some hard questions.R.M.C.
