Watching George Learmonth test for gas in the mine the other day reminded Peb Conrad of. an experience that he and William McQuade had one time.“Speaking of gas explosions”, began Peb, “reminds me of one time Bill McQuade and I were in the Indian Creek Mine and set off some. You know gas expands downward twelve times. That means that if an inch of gas let go, it makes a flame that reaches down twelve inches.“We must have set off about five or six inches of the stuff. We threw ourselves flat down face downward. I didn’t get burned a bit. But McQuade happened to be standing in front of a boulder about a foot and a half high. You know Bill isn’t very small any-t way and he threw himself directly a-i cross that boulder. He protected his I face and feet all right, but it burned the seat right out of his pants.”*
