CARTHAGE PRESS, Thurs., February 17, 1972—P-9 kkk keene kakaenne’ Rick Allen, Carthage ban tamweight, joined two other area athestes in capturing novice championships Wednesday night in the Regional Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament. The first two nights of the tourney were held at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Kan., and the finals were moved to the auditorium at Kansas City, MO. Jerry Burtram was the only one of three area open fighters who survived quarterfinal action. Allen pounded out a unanimous decision over Doug Bootka of the Whatsover Athletic Club of Kansas City in the 119-pound division. Leonard Johnson of Webb City posted a unanimous decision over Roy Martin, Gateway Athletic Club of Kansas City, to cap the 132 pound crown. Joplin’s Jim Pearish was awarded a split decision over Marshall Zuern of Miami for the 125-pound division championship. Buttram won an unanimous decision over Earl Shell, Gateway Athletic Club, in the 165- pound open division. He will face Ricky Miller of Gateway in the semifinals tonight. Joining Buttram in the open semifinals will be Bill Pearish of Joplin against Oliver James, Gateway, in the 119 pound category and John Pinney of Joplin who will battle Richard Keith, Gateway, in the 156-pound division. Hank Gregory, Seneca, winner of the heavyweight division in the Carthage tourney earlier this year will face Larry Martin of Gateway in the light heavyweight championships. Area boxers losing in the open quarterfinals Wednesday night included Kenny Graves, Joplin, who lost a unanimous decision to Tyrone Wren, Gateway, in the 139-pound category; Mike Mc Clure, Columbus, Kan., who lost to Leroy Green Jr., Bell Athletic Club of Kansas City, via a TKO in 1:04 of the second round in the 147-pound category, and Jim Miller, Springfield, who was stopped in the second round of a heavyweight pairing with Arull Dodson, of JFK Athletic Club. Graves and McClure won championships in the Lions tourney here, while Miller lost in the heavyweight finals to Gregory.
