Backyard rink is his delightTINLEY PARK — A hockey player and fan for years, Glen Ariel, 16950 Elm Lane, Tinley Park, decided to do what he could to help boys from the area find a place to skate. For the past seven years, he has been flooding his backyard for hockey enthusiasts, and kids who just like to skate. As the winter season approaches, the boys assist Ariel in spreading a large piece of plastic, 83 by 38 feet, over the backyard. Two-by-fours are then set, and plywood, four feet high, placed to enclose the rink. Then comes about six inches of water, some cold weather, and Ariel’s skating rink is open for the winter. The hockey players have organized about five teams and plan their own competition with teams from Oak Forest,Harvey and Orland Park. The rink is in use from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. by children of all ages. Refreshments are most often supplied by the skaters, as is fuel to heat the garage which is used for warming up and changing of skates. The Ariel car has yet to see the inside of the Ariel garage. At the end of the season, there is no lack of able hands to help dismantle the structure, everyone returns to help.Glen and his wife, Vera, have two children, Ted, 11, a student at Bert Fulton School, and Sandra, 1, who have met all kinds of interesting people drawn to the home by the common interest in the ice skating pond. The only complaint Ariel has is the necessity of having someone stay close to the telephone to take messages and relay them to the skaters in the backyard.
