Each hunter tried to outdo the previous tale teller when at length the embers of the fire grew grey. Then the oldest man of the village shook the ashes from his pipe and a hushed silence came over the gathering*“Once upon a tune/* he opened his tale, “there lived on yonder mountain side, the largest bear m the whola world, and hunters for moons and moons planned to bring his pelt into the village, all without success.“Now there lived in our village three brothers born om the same day of the same mother, and all three brothers grew to be mighty hunters of bear.“The hunting moon came that year, round and yellow, and a crisp wind whispered through the hemlocks yonder. On such a night, men dream well; and, much to the surprise of the three brothers, each dreamed that he had captured the great bear ©a the mountain side. At the next noon, the village bid farewell to the three mighty hunters who went forth armed with their best bows and arrows to capture the mighty bear on the mountain side.“It was late afternoon when they scented the trail and onward up the mountain they continued as the twilight grew fainter and fainter. At length to their startled eyes, they saw the bear outlined on the top of the mountain and each drew his bow to shoot. Each called to the other to let the other one shoot first and as they debated the question, the great bear moved upward into the sky, pursued by the three mighty hunters.”The old man pointed to the sky and all his hearers saw the Great Bear still pursued by the three mighty hunters. White star-gazers often call the Bear the big dipper and name the three hunters as the three kings or shepherds.inopP*hehi]neacdecemibrbywcdi1Asinifo:iniyetrjthianblitobuW(axthhibeleicodcteburetilmefmarlonlt;bilt;1*aiaithoiccfo
