McCarthy and.Dr. LaPiana defeated Philip Kane.The convention was held in the dining room of the Louis Joliet hotel. Virtually all the precincts in the township were represented. George F. Sehring, chairman of the Will County Democratic Central committee presided. He was named chairman of the township organization.Promises SupportThe defeated candidates in the three cornered race for highway commissioner all promised to support the ticket during the campaign, as did Mr. Kane who was defeated by Dr. LaPiana by the narrow margin of four votes. Mr. McGuire won by 29 votes.Leaders in the township fight expressed themselves as well satisfied with the result of the election. Chairman Sehring stated that he believed the two candidates will give a good account of themselves April 5 no matter who the Republicans nominate February 29, the day scheduled for their township convention.Mr. McGuire is well ecquainted throughout the township and is popular enough to poll enough votes to win, his friends say.Nominee ProminentDr. LaPiana is a physician and surgeon and one of the most prominent Italian-Americans in the city. He has been engaged in Americanization work as chairman of the Americanibation committee of the American Legion. He was professor of languages, and before making his home in Joliet taught Italian and French. He was a captain in the medical corps of the U. S. army during the World War and served in the Pliillippines.lie was nominated by Antone Nema-nich, and was introduced from the floor of the convention by Dominic Romano, candidate for circuit clerk at the Democratic primary April 12.
