It is reported from Sydney that mitigation of Lieutenant Witton’s sentence of imprisonment for life may be expected. Lieutenant Wit ton was the junior officer of the section of the Bushveldt Carbineers concerned in the shooting of Boer prisoners. It will be remembered that Lieutenants Handcock and Morant were tried by court-martial and shot, while Lieutenant Witton was sentenced to imprisonment for life, and is now in prison in England. For ‘Witton it was pleaded that he had to carry out the order of his superior officer, and should not be held liable in respect of such obedience.
