Donnell Junior High’s Dan Stumpp was calling it ‘The Valentine Day’s Massacre.’ The Atoms, with Lee Smith (95) and Bruce Heater (155) continuing a fantastic streak of pins, captured 20 matches and had two draws in 32 head-to-head meetings and dominated the ‘City Wrestling Championships’ Saturday ight. A nnell repeated as city titlists for the third straight season, recording 99 points to outdistance Glenwood 59 and Central 57. “That was the best job I've ever had a wrestling team do,” Connell Coach Lee Smith said. ‘‘We had some outstanding performances.” Smith, a boxing champion of three states at one time, got his eighth and ninth pins in 10 matches, including one over Glenwood's Troy Alithaus who had been the only grappler to go the limit earlier this season. . Meanwhile, Heater rolled to his seventh and eighth straight pins in an unbeaten season. “Of any wrestler I’ve ever coached Smith has the most natural ability. He’s a first-year man too,’’ the Atom mentor said. ‘‘Ain’t no way nobody was gonna beat him Saturday night. “I call Heater ‘The Professor.’ He’s got the mind and knows what’s coming off. If he wasn’t so good he wouldn’t have pinned either of those guys,’’ Smith said. ‘“‘They were stalling to stay off their backs but Bruce used his head and finally worked them into something.’’ Dan Eaton (167), co-captain along with Heater, was moved up one weight class and finished an unbeaten season with a superior decision and win by disqualification. Brian Parke (132), who couldn't crack the starting lineup earlier in the year, finished 6-0 with two decisions while Jim Tiler (85), Chip Almes (90) and Ron Bowden (110) were other double winners for Donnell. Greg Beatty (115) had a pin and drew with Central's previously unbeaten-untied Jeff Miracle, who had beaten him earlier in the season. Beatty has seven tie. Bruce Kelly (145) also had a pin and draw Glenwood’s Bill Eckert, who raised his record to 8-0-1, recorded a pin and decision in the 120-pound class and combined with double winners John Kilpatrick (105) and Randy Smaltz (138) as the Eagles’ bright spots. Paul Doppler (167), Bill Pricot (Hwt.), Joe Van Den Eynde (126) and Ron Risser (132) had undefeated streaks snapped. Central’s John Gerken pinned one op ponent and decisioned the other to finish 8- 0 and shared the spotlight with twin winners Walter Schramm (Hwt.) and Steve Linhart (145), who was winless in four matches before the championships. Donnell, who outscored the Spartans 45- 22 in head-to-head matches and whip the Eagles 54-22, got a surprise from Jim Tier (85) who entered the competition with a 3-5 record but won two times by 9-0 and 4-1 scores.
