Carthage bantamweight Rick Allen scored a split decision over Quapaw, Okla.’s game Tony McMinn in one of the most im pressive performances ever witnessed Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan. in quarterfinal action of the Regional Golden Gloves tourney. For his efforts, McMinn was awarded the Argentine Optimist Club sportsmanship trophy. Allen returned in the semifinals to stop David Sardeson, Springfield, in 17 seconds of the third round. Both Allen and McMinn won titles in the Carthage Lions Club tourney here. However, Allen competed as an open battler. He was eligible for novice com petition at Kansas City since he has never won a title there. Allen will pair off in the title bout tonight in the 119-pound division against Doug Bootka of the Kansas City Whatsoever Club. Joplin novice featherweight Jim Pearish scored two technical knockouts to advance to the finals tonight against Marshall Zuern, Seneca, who won the Miami, Okla, tourney. Zuern scored split decisions over Cornelius Jones of Don Bosco and Alvin Ogletree of Gateway. Other area winners Tuesday night included Leonard Johnson of Webb City, Ron Kuhn of Seneca, Jim Smith of Miami and, Jim Miller of Springfield. Smith will face Ricky Matlock of the Bell club in the 165-pound novice title fight, while Miller faces Arall Dorson, JFK, in the novice heavyweight title category. Miller stopped Roderick Dunmore, Gateway, in the first round Tuesday night to qualify for the finals. Several open division pairings are scheduled on tonight’s card with the open finals scheduled Thursday night.
