HACKNEY BOARD OFGUARBIANS.un tin then refe:The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday afternoon in the Boardroom at the Workhouse, Sidney-road, Homer-ton, when the Chairman, P. Thomson, Esq., presided, and the following members were present:— Messrs. R. Martin and J. Jones, J.P., L.O.O., (vice-chairmen), Butters, Grimedell, Pinch, Freeman, Lewis, E. Jones, Beurle, Morley, Pimlett, Woods, Allardyce, Layland, Bowden, Steel, MoCall, J.P., Brett, Dr. Millar, M.A.B., Dr. Smith, Rev. G. P* Read, M.A.B. *Stattbtics,The statistical retnrna showed that there were in the Workhouse 1.070 inmates against 1,038, and in the Infirmary, 491 against 433 in the. corresponding week of last year. In .the Schools at Brentwood there were 509 children as against fill last year. Total number of indoor poor chargeable to the Union was 3,009 as against 2,887 in the corresponding week of last year. 4,036 persons were relieved out of the House at a cost of £263 17*. 10d, as compared with 4,634 persons at a cost of £314 19a. 4d. in the like period of last year.Imported Small Pox.Dr. Millar, having reported the condition of epidemic disease in the Metropolitan Asylums Board hospitals, as appears in the report of the Shoreditch Board of Guardians,The Rev. G. P. Read, M.A.B., observed that at the last meeting inquiry was made as to whence the one case of small-pox arose. He had since made inquiry and found that it was an imported case from Portugal. The case was the only one on the ship and it was not developed until the man left the ship.The New Well.On the motion of Mr. Martin it was formally resolved that the Board agree to the expenditure of a sum not exceeding £255 to defray the cost of sinking a well on the Workhouse premises, and of pro-viding the necessary pumps in connection therewith, in addition to the sum of £1,580 which the Guardians had already resolved to expend for those purposes. rThe Superannuation Question,The Board proceeded to take into consideration as to the granting of a* superannuation allowance to Mary Ann Gharsley, late night-nurse in the Infirmary , and any proposal that may be made in regard thereto.Dr. Millar, in moving that a sum of 5s. a week be granted, stated that Mary Ann Gharsley was an excellent officer and had served a number of years under himself, Dr. White, and Dr. Garmaa. Three years ago the Board granted her £25 spread over two years, and then in February, 1888, the Board granted her 5s. a week; but the resolution bad passed without tbe statutory notice and consequently was without legal effect.Mr. Steel seconded the motion, which was supported by Mr. J. Jones, J.P., Mr. McCall, J.P., Mr. Martin, and others, and opposed by tbe Rev. G-. P. Read, Mr. Grimsdeli and Mr. E. Jones.
