The Board of Vigo County Commissioners Friday an nounced approval of a petition to vacate Sampson street, just west of the Wabash river bridge, from U. S. Hwy. 40 south to Taylor avenue to per mit expansion of Valentine Company, Inc., to the west of the existing plant structure. Commissioners Harry P. Brentlinger Jr., board presi dent, Michael Sweeney and Joseph Silcock said that in ap proving the petition they were accepting the recommendation of a specially appointed com mittee of road viewers who found the closing of the road in the public inerest. Carl A. Valentine, president of the firm, said that final plans have not crystallized and no specfic information concern ing expansion was available as yet. He did say that an expen diture of more than $100,000 within the next few years was likely to be involved and that the present employment of 60 people at the plant could easily double over the period of sev eral more years. New Routes Added. Bill Valentine, vice president of the company, noted that the firm recently added to its routes extending coverage some 120 miles and including Colum bus, Seymour and other com munities in south central In diana. Tentative plans call for a new cooler, new production area and a new killing room. The company president recalled that the present plant started with 24 employees and said that he wouldn’t be surprised if it should grow to employ several hundred in the foreseeable future. With the closing of Sampson street to Taylor avenue, traffic will be routed a block west to Schley avenue along the Dres ser School property. The com missioners noted that Schley avenue is 40 feet wide and bet ter able to handle traffic than the 25-foot-wide Sampson street. Benjamin Franklin was the fifteenth child in a family of 117 children.
