RELIEF DIRECTOR OF COMBINED CHARITIES TALKS TO STUDENTSMiss Eleanor Mawdsley, β25, social worker and relief director of the Associated Charities in the Alton area, told of her experiences in this work at the chapel hour Monday, February 4. Speaking with first-hand information on the subject, Miss Mawdsley outlined the problems which the relief administrators must face in this district. From one hundred and fifty-two families dependent on charitable organizations in 1929, the number has increased during the depression years to 1800 families. βAnd over ninety per cent of these people are honest/' Miss Mawdsley stated. In spite of the many problems in the work she asserted her faith in human nature and emphasized that too frequently the human side of the relief problem is forgotten.Problem Of ReliefMiss Mawdsley pointed out that the great majority of people on relief would prefer to be independent and are anxious for the time when they can help themselves again. The great problem of the relief is to keep up the morale of the unemployed and destitute, in order that they may resume where they left off when reverses came.Problems of mental and physical health due to depression conditions have been greatly increased. Medical care and proper recreation are very necessary. Domestic relations have been very trying in depression-hit homes, and the liquor question added to the difficulty in many situations.
