• • ■To illustrate the grit displayed by some of the early-day colonists, Mr Kirk instanced the case of one of two brothers, Coneilus and Moees Beard, of Northam, grand ancles to Mr Habert Beard, of Kellerberrin. Coneilos seems to have been more than usually industrious. He was working for John T. Cook, a settler on the Avon River, and used to go to work at daylight and continue until he could not see the furrow for his master, then go home, have his tea, go to bed and tell hie wife to call him in a couple of hours* time. He would then get np and do four hours* grubbing land for himself, and after another rest, be at work aa usual for his boss. When the tillage leases were made available he went on bis own land and died in comfortable circumstances.
