Oliver Alien, Vancouver, Wshing-ton, K. F. D. No. 5, writes under date of Jan. 24th, as follows: “1 note whatyou say in The Ranch of the loth inst. in answering Mr. J. D. Taggard in regard to his seedling apples. I have a small orchard of Northern Spy, Ben Davis and Baldwin and will add to it this year a few trees of King David and Delicious. But of all the apples I have my choice is a seedling. Good winter variety, keeps well, medium to large size, tine color, ripen about Dec. 1st. When we have callers and the apples are brought out, the callis invariably for the seedling.“I would not like to do with out The Ranch, have been helped so much especially by the Horticultural Department.”From a clipping made from the Morning Oregonian of Portland, 1 learn that Mr. Allen has named this new apple the Columbian. From what he says of this apple 1 judge that it is a promising seedling. As 1 said in writing of Mr. Taggard’s seedling, we should keep a careful lookout for the chance seedlings for in this way our best apples have come into notice.I hope to get a few scions of this promising apple and next fall 1 hope to be able to sample some of the fruit.
