The funeral was held from the residence last Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted at the graveside and being in charge of the Odd Fellows, of which order the deceased had been an active and life-long membe^Aurelius OrmandoCarpenter was born in Townsend, Vermont, November 28, 1836, thus being over S2years of age at the time cf his .death.%He received his education in the dis-♦3 trict school of his native town until r 1851, in which year he entered the newspaper office of his stepfather, George W. Nichols, remaining thereuntil 1854, when he returned to*3 Townsend for a four-months’ course I in Iceland seminary. In 1855 he went to Kansas, working at odd jobs, among other things assisting as chainman in the survey of Topeka, now the capital of that state. He also assisted in the fipst newspaper established in that state, the “Her-• • 4aid of Freedom.” He assisted in the founding of another paper, the “Free State”, in the winter of 1855 and^ 1856. In May of .1856 he went to help make a settlement at Ottawa creek, near Prafrie City. Here he was involved in the repelling of border raids and on June 2, 1856, was wounded at what is known asthe battle of Black Jack.
