, FEBRUARY' 14, 1895Moxrok Twp.. Feb. 12th. ltfftS. EniTOli Northwest:—We understand petition* are being circulated, ami which are receiving many afjrna lt;urea, ml drained to the board of directors of the Napoleon Fair, asking them to debar the *ell-ing of bear and ail gambling devices from the fair ground*. And. we also understand. that if the demands of the petitioner* are not acceded to, there in a clause engrafted in the petition which is in the nature of a threat, or a boycot, which pledges those signing the petition to withdraw their support from the fair.Nobody denies the right of petition, but it is unquestionably unlawful to threaten or boycot, and it looks very much to a uiau up a tree as though the petitioners were violating the letter of the statutes just as much as are those of whom the petitioners com-plaiu. /in our opinion, it Is ill-advised to raise this question in the manner as is recited in the petition. If the statutes are being violated, there is a remedy through the courts, and the violators lay themselves open to arrest. tine ami imprisonment, whether it is for selling intoxicating liquors within two miles of a fair ground, or for inaugurating a boycot. The Napoleon Fair, which ha* been a decided success since its Inauguration, can ascribe success to the fact that it has not catered to the demands of any one class, hut, on the contrary, has had an eye single to the tastes ami likes of all classes. Just as soon as you attempt to conduct a fair in accordance to the likes and dislikes of any class, just so sure will the undertaking be h failure. This fact has been demonstrated time and again. Of course there may be exceptions, but they do not exist in communities made up as in Henry county. Here we find many excellent citizens opposed to horse racing at the fair, while their neighbors are just the opposite in their belief and think a fair would he u failure without the speeding of horses. And so it may go through the list of all that Is usually seen upon most fair grounds. It is to be hoped the citizeus of Henry county will let good enough alone, and that they will throw no obstacles in the way of the future of the fair, an institution which has become almost the pride of Henry county. There is no surer way to kill a fair organization than to run it In the interest of a class and to their tastes only.
