BY DANA BALASH HUBBARD—The Hubbard Lady Eagles basketball squad continued their winning ways as they posted two victories in action last week. Last Saturday the locals dumped Beaver Local 65-45, while on Monday they beat Struthers, 52-29, a game in which Cara Hendrik set a new all time school record for points in a career with 872. Hendrix broke the old mark set by Brenda McNicol who finished her high school career with 864. With the wins the Lady Eagles improved to 13-3 while the Beavers dropped 5-9 and the Wildcats to 8-9. Beaver Local proved to be tough opposition for the Lady Eagies in the early going as both squads were deadlocked at ten at the end of one period. The locals then captured the lead for good at the 2:10 mark when Cara Hendrix connected on a three point play putting Bert Gallaghers Lady Eagles up 20-17. At the end of the first 16 minutes of basketball the locals were on top 26- 23. Two quick baskets by Amy Madeline, who finished with a career high 23 points, pushed the lead out to seven points, 30-23, with 6:45 left in the period. The Lady Eagles led comfortably throughout the frame and led 44-35 at its conclusion. The final frame saw the locals outscore the Beavers 8-0 in a three minute span and extended their lead to 16 points, 57-41 with 3:22 left and coast to the victory. Cara Hendrix chipped in with 16 points while Carla Hendrix earned eight. Beaver Locai was paced by Stephanie Cole with 23 while Louise Souders popped in 13. Earlier in the week the locals had no problem as they defeated Struthers, 52-29 at the Wildcat gym. Struthers had the lead for only one time in the game, at 4-2 with 6:35 left in the first frame. The locals fed at all quarter breaks, 13-4 at the end of one, 30-14 at recess, and 40-22 at the end of three. Cara Hendrix and Missy Baiash each popped in 14 points. Hendrix set the new record at the 1:24 mark of the second quarter when she hit a 15 footer from the right side. Julie Nemeth and Karen Chickonoski paced the Wildcats with ten points a piece. The Lady Eagie junior varsity squad split its two games, beating Beaver Local, 36-35 and losing to Struthers, 22-19. The Lady Eagies will close out its regular season tomorrow evening against Warren Western Reserve at the Eagie gym, before playing in the Sectional tourney against Youngstown East Thursday, February 21 at 8:30 p.m. at the Eagie gym.
