Physics Olympics to be at YSU April 13YOUNGSTOWN - Area high schools have been invited to send teams of students to participate in the seventh annual “Physics Olympics” to be held April 13 at the Youngstown State University campus.Last year 18 high schools from throughout the district participated in this event, including three first timers.‘‘Physics Olympics” is a competitive event for high school physics-science clubs and is sponsored by the Physics and Astronomy Department of YSU’s College of Arts and Sciences.To help defray costs, each team will be charged a $10 entry fee. Registration deadline is Feb. 15.Parents as well as teachers are welcome to attend, observe and cheer their student team.In addition to trophies for the top three high schools and medals for the top three individuals in each event, certificates will be awarded to other leaders. There also will be a number of special prizes, such as equipment and publications.‘‘Physics Olympics” events include the Fermi Quiz, in which the teams are asked questions in physics which require a fast, rough estimate of a quantity; the “Flying Machine” in which competitors will execute accuracy launches; building the biggest “House of Cardsl” an egg drop from a rooftop, and other contests and quizzes.Each school may enter one team consisting of four to 12 students in the “Olympics” competition, which will begin at 8:30a.m.Additional information may be obtained by contacting Dr. Stephen Hanzely, professor of physics and astronomy at 742-3617.
