Winter Carnival 1969 is well under way. Last night Cheri Decker, ju nior from Port Washington, was crowned queen and John Besch, sophomore from Appleton, was crowned king. Miss Decker was sponsored by Chi Omega sorority and Besch was sponsored by Tau Kappa Ep silon. Along with the king and queen, a court will reign over the re maining Winter Carnival festivi ties. Their court consists of Kathy Brown, junior from Madison, sponsored by Alpha Phi sorority and Kay King, sophomore from Oshkosh, sponsored by Ski Heil ers. Men on the court are Bob Messer, senior from Blair, Ne braska, sponsored by Scott Hall North and Steve Berman, senior from Milwaukee, backed by Del ta Sigma Phi fraternity. The king and queen and the court were announced during in termission of the Al Hirt con cert. They will reign over the rest of Winter Carnival Week which will be culminated by the Winter Carnival Dance and pre sentation of awards Saturday night in the Union, Jean Kendall, senior from Green Bay and Dick Bidwell, senior from Menasha are this year’s Winter Carnival co-chair men. _ Over 25 tons of ice arrived to day for ice sculpture competi tion. Unlike last year, there is plenty of snow for snow sculp tures. Some groups began re ceiving truckloads of ice weeks 1g Preliminaries for the games vegan Monday. Game elimination will run all week and end Satur day afternoon. “This year we have a lot more entertainment,” Gail Floether, Reeve Union fine arts director, said. Al Hirt performed last night, and “The Dickens,” a cof fee-house circuit group, will per form twice nightly tonight through Saturday in the Titan Room. No admission is being charged for “The Dicken’s’ performances. In reference to recent cam pus disturbances, Miss Floether said, “The themes for the sculp tures were turned in way before Christmas, and the people in volved in the carnival aren’t the same type as those causing all this trouble.
