GREAT WAR TALK AT THE GRAND THEATER. FROM ONE WHO HAS BEEN ON THE FIELD DR. RAY L. WILBUR TO SPEAK The Address Will be Given at Twelve Thirty, and As Should Plan to Attend Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur will speak at the Grand Theatre at 12:30 p. m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, on “Back From the Trenches.” Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur, who is speaking through the Middle West in behalf of the U. S. Food Adminis tration, is president of Stanford Un iversity ,and a distinguished physi cian and medical scientist. He was one of Herbert Hoover's chief aids in organizing the U. S. Food Admin istration and is thoroughly familiar with the wonderful work accomplish ed by the Belgian Relief Commission. “Shipping shortage and food short age are the two striking problems of this war today,” Dr. Wilbur said re cently, “When we make a survey of the food situation last spring we knew that the world supply of foods was short and would be shorter this winter. You can't take 18,000,000 men out of production and put them into the destruction of human pro ducts and expect things to go on as before, and thatis what has taken place. We knew that. We knew that We were the great source of food for these belligerent countries. We pre sented to the American people the problem of food and later on the im portance of food from the standpoint of the war, and then of the conser vation of food and the necessity of stopping every waste of food,.” Dr. Wilbur is one of the few food experts who knows definitely the al lied nations depend on the American supply of grains and meats in order to fight the war successfully during the trying year of 1918. He has followed closely the war time phenomena of the allied nations depleting their own food stocks and coming to depend on overseas sup plies in order to continue their battle against a militarism that threatens this nation if Germany is allowed to remain undefeated.
