A Big Conflagration Nipper in the Bud—City Building Damaged— The Loss Covered by Insurance. Coury, February 11.At five o'clock this morning our citizens were startled by the sounding of a general fire alarm. It was discovered that the alarm was caused by flames in the city building. Thither the firemen quickly made their way, and by well directed and energetic effort succeeded in getting the fire under control, but not until considerable dam age had been close to the postoffice and room above it. The fire originated in the room di rectly over the postoffice, and burned a hole through the floor, setting the parti tion in the postoffice on fire and thus commenrating with the letters, news papers, etc. in the general delivery. The fire had gained a good footing and was spreading rapidly when the water was turned in, which extinguished the blaze but did considerable damage at the same time. The room in which the fire started had been used Friday evening by the members of Stanford hose company, and it is supposed they left too much fire in store,the heat from which fired the partition. J.D. Bentley occupied one of the rooms facing on Centre street, as a gro cery. His stock was badly damaged by water, but fortunately for him it was covered by insurance, as was also the stock of hardware in the room next the post office, owned by FE. K. Guignon Son. Postmaster Gleason was early on the spot with a posse of men and removed everything from the office that was left, and at this writing is busily engaged as sorting and drying the mail matter. He has opened his office in the base room in the same building. Repairs will be made as soon as posible. Leroy Troesdale, a son of Alderman Troesdale, fell from the porch of the building while endeavoring to save some of his father’s property, durin the progress of the fire, and had his col lar bone broken A ladder, on which three men were working, broke, and they were precipitated to the ground, but fortunately they costained no injury. PERSONAL. —C. H. Whipple, of Ashabala, Ohio, is the guest of Mr. and Mra. J. Davin, ~Charley Babcock is again located in Oil City after a long siege of Bradford. —John J. Alter, of Reynoldsville, has been visiting in Oil City for a few days. —J. P. Zane, Harry Marlin and Joseph Seep, of Bradford, were in the city Sat urday. —John Sliger, a former Old Citizen, and one of the Denmon's graduates, is revisiting his native heath. ~Dr. Egbert has been called to Leese burg, Pa., to attend the funeral of Mrs. Egbert’s mother, and will be absent three or four days. William slved and wife started for the east on Saturday. They will visit New York and Boston and will be ab sent a week or ten days. ~L. Kirk White, of York, 1’, special agent and adjuster of the Phenix'as surance company, of London, is in the city on business for his company. Mr. White is one of the most popular in surance men in the country, and has fiaored in some capacity or other with all the leading insurance companies for the past twenty years.
