LairdYouth fights costly diseaseA trust fund has been set up to benefit Kari Laird, a four-year-old from Chicago Heights, who has cerebral palsy.The youth has outgrown her wheelchair and needs a new one, which costs about $2,000, according to her parents.Kari’s mother Sherri said her daughter also requires leg braces, $550; arm splints, $150; a special car seat, $350; and a piece of equipment called a “Grasshopper,” which allows her to be put in different positions for sitting or sleeping, $837.The family also needs a van with a lift. A lift alone costs about $4,000, according to the girl’s mother.Kari requires ;herapy two or three afternoons each week, and her mother, who is pregnant and also has a three-year-old son, said she is finding it harder t* lift Kari out of the car.Donations are being taken at the First National Bank of Chicago Heights, 25 East 16th street.Information is available by calling Sherri Laird it 754-9199.A recent fund-raiser netted the Lairds $600, but Kari’s needs are much more costly than the amount the event raised.
